Glass Spectacle

"All that was once directly lived has become mere representation."

Debord. Society of the Spectacle 1967

The glass spectacle is about the tension between two aspects of blown glass; The human and social process of glass blowing with all its showmanship, physicality, agility and drama and the glass product itself, a commercial object, with a role to play in a wider economic system.

On offer are two experiences at once. An artificial version of the glass blowing process twined with a real, hand made object. In keeping with Debord’s statement it is the mediated, fictitious experience that dominates while the reality it sprang from becomes secondary.
