Still Life Story
Based on Comet in Moominland by Tove Jansson

In my degree project I am working on illustration in the form of a series of still-life photos. I became interested in still life and stage design when I designed the cultural magazine Femkul in 2007. Instead of explaining the magazine’s content in text on the cover, we staged this content in the form of a still life, allowing each object to symbolise an article in the magazine.

In my work I am continuing to examine how the documentary element of photography can be combined with shifts in size and unexpected perspectives in order to create filmic and dreamlike motifs. Creation of still lifes is similar to collage technique. The elements are gathered from various contexts and placed in a new context. Everyday objects can gain a new symbolic value when they are given a new place, and when the surface and the content differ a gulf arises between what you think you see and what an image really represents. As an art director, graphic designer, illustrator and stage designer I get to combine my knowledge of illustration and graphic design.
