As a counterpart to the typically hard materials and shining surfaces of industrial design, I have also been interested in textiles and their many possibilities. Textiles are often associated with fragility, even though a fabric can be strong enough to be used as a safety net or for putting out fires. To inspire other designers to think in both soft and hard materials, I have chosen three stereotypical industrial-design products, and have examined how a soft and flexible textile can contribute to innovative solutions. For example, can you make a folding vacuum cleaner or a set of bathroom scales that can be rolled up and can show weight as a pattern, or how do you actually design an attractive mobile radiator?
