My degree project has involved working together with abb Corporate Research to develop a new type of robot. I wanted to avoid big, orange robots that are kept in cages that signal, ‘Keep away, I’m dangerous,’ and design a smaller, friendlier robot. This robot would be able to accomplish useful tasks and work with, and alongside its ‘colleagues’. The design of this robot would express positive values. It would inspire trust rather than fear. ‘The 1980s was the decade of the pc, the 90s of the Internet, but I believe that the decade just starting will be the decade of the robot.’
