Credits: We dress up as ourselves. Clothes are practical additions to our body and symbolic expressions of our psyche. Clothes act as visual representations of our dreams and opinions – symbols that help us communicate the role we wish to play. The role, like the clothes, is characterized by the play we form part of – our social and cultural situation. We cannot distinguish ourselves from this context. Who we are and how we are perceived cannot be clearly stated – the fiction is our reality and the disguise our identity. This ambiguity can be clarified by application of photographic images of clothes on clothes. The photographs illustrate the sartorial symbols in ideal form – a form in which they are stationary and clear, yet simultaneously abstract and inaccessible – a form that corresponds to the symbols’ socially constructed content, and to fashion’s attraction to the Utopian.
